propagation sucks

Click Photo to enlarge

I've been a amateur radio operator going on nearly fifty years and have never seen/heard such poor propagation. So much fading (QSB) as now. Several times today I have had Europe call me, but then fade out to nothing. The rule of thumb is to use the highest band that is open but this is not working. 28, 21, 24, 10 megahertz are almost useless with the QSB. 14 megahertz provided some Europe and South American contacts but 7 and 5 had very weak signals, but may pick up with darkness falling. We are at the bottom of the sun's solar cycle I hope I live 5 or 6 years to see the upward turn. ..... Jack WB9OTX

Just returned home 12/16/2016

Just returned home from the Surgeon that did the back operation on me.
He gave me the all clear - I have no restrictions now.
I do have a very slight pain in my left leg while walking but it will
go away in time he tells me. I have lost about four months of my
life with this, but I am now ready to return to full life again. I am
so happy it has turned out so well. Thank you to all for the many
cards and emails wishing me well. ..... Jack

I'm walking like Amos McCoy

I had surgery to repair a herniated disk in my back. The displaced disk was pinching the nerves that lead to the left leg. The pain was unbearable. The surgery went well but the nerves were damaged. It has been 31 days and each day I am getting better, but it will take a few more weeks (I hope) till I am back to 100%. In the mean time I am walking like Amos McCoy.

World War II casualties alone

These people died so you do not speak German or Japanese.

USA 131,028,000 in WWII alone.

I can not even think why these protesters would not want to protect the symbol of our freedoms.

Most know nothing about WWI or WWII or the sacrifices our veterans both dead and alive gave to our citizens of the USA.
Just try burning the flag in Cuba, Venezuela, or North Korea.

Up but not running

Went to Kings Daughters Hospital today and seen a new doctor. He prescribed a new medison and after even 6 hours I am almost completely pain free. I travel to Columbus, In. to see a specialist. The doctors think my only chance for recovery is a operation on my back. I am not looking forward to it, but if it will remove the awaful pain I have endured for going on 2 1/2 months now I will go for it. I am now walking with out crutch or cane. I am still a little uneasy with out them but able to drive cars with no clutch. So I'm no longer grounded in front of the TV. I think I have seen every rerun TV had to offer. Thanks to all for the many cards and emails wishing me well.

Super bowl 2017 tickets

A Buddy of mine has two tickets for the 2017 Super bowl. Box seats plus airfares, accommodation etc., but he didn't realize when he bought them that this is going to be on the same day as his wedding - so he can't go.
If you're interested and want to go instead of him, it's at St Peter's Church in New York City at 5pm. Her name's Louise.

WORLD’S BIGGEST RADIO DISH UP AND RUNNING

The FAST radio astronomy dish (Tianyan), in People’s Republic of China (PRC), is now the largest antenna in the world, beating the United States’ Arecibo dish. Over 500 meters in diameter, it is designed for medium and short wavelength studies of the cosmos, addressing issues of universe-origins, pulsars and collapsed stars, galaxy formation, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), among others.

Back Home Now

I was in the hospital 4 days at Madison, In. then transferred to Louisville Norton Hospital for six days. I have a herniated disc in my lower back. It has effected my left leg. But at least I am up and walking with a cane. I was treated very well at both hospitals but it is sure good to be home again. Thursday was the first day I was able to set enjoying the sweet sounds of my Ham Radio.I talked to several stations on 40 meters. I will try to get back to posting a few things on my Blog now. Thank you for all of the get well cards and emails from friends and even a few of  my followers of this Blog. ..... Jack

I'm now on crutches

It is going on 6 weeks that I have been hurting with one or two parts of my body. My shoulder is about 80% back to normal, but my hip and lower leg is now the problem. I have almost unbearable pain while walking. I am using crutches to get around. I have had several tests and X-rays without finding the cause. More test results to come in today, Maybe they will be the ones that pin point the cause. I still can not set for any length of time in a straight back chair, this means I can't use my radios for more than a few minutes at a time. and that is a bummer, thank God  for my net book computer. ........ Money Orders cannot be canceled

Did you know:
Buyers: never send money to a P.O. Box address, never use Western Union or any other kiosk type payment system. Money Orders and Certified checks cannot be withdrawn and once sent, cannot be canceled. Use extreme caution and be certain who you're dealing with. If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is. PayPal is always on the side of the buyer, I know - I was the seller to a guy with buyers remoras - I had to refund the money just because he changed his mind. It cost me 3% of the selling price to refund.

Icom IC-7300

Icom IC-7300 Scope screen
I have had a very painful shoulder for about two weeks but it is getting better. This has been a bummer as I have a new Ham radio transceiver and have not been able to turn the knobs. Today I  was able to put it to use in the JT65 digital mode. I can just click the computer screen then set back for a minute or two. I made a contact in North Carolina with 20 watts, then I turned down the power output to two watts, called CQ and a fellow from Ill. answered me with a very good report. I called again and then a QSO developed from Mo. The Icom IC-7300 digs out the signals slightly better than the Kenwood TS-590 that was used before. It always  amazes me just how far such little RF power output can go. Well I called it quits for awhile, I may try it again this afternoon on 20 meters for some European contacts.
Thanks to all readers for your concern. I'm getting better, it is just going to take a few more days..... Jack

A quick short answer, I have a very bad hurt shoulder and it is even a painful chore to set before the computer for any length of time. I will be back posting information and goofy stuff soon. Thanks for your concern....... Jack

Just added this little amp to my 5 watt FT-817. When 5 watts don't cut it flip the switch and you have an added 40 or 45 watts. I have been using it mostly on CW but I have made a few SSB QSOs with great reports. If you want one look around for the best price. Mine was $155 but you can find them at all prices, even over $225.00. Shipped from China - takes about 2 weeks. Makes Ham Radio fun...... Jack WB9OTX

Solar activity at a record low

In my 45 years as an Amateur Radio Operator (ham) I have not seen propagation this low. On June 25th, 2016 the Solar flux was at 77 and there were zero sun spots. To make the best of a very bad situation I did manage to contact two stations in Austrialia (VK) on the 40 meter band (7Mhz.) Solar activity cycles every eleven years and the perditions were; the low was one year ago. I think the low must be now in 2016. For all Amateur Radio operators lets hope for better conditions with Mr. Sun in the future. ..... Jack WB9OTX

A risky mission is underway

As a Ham Radio operator I ran phone patches for the crew for 2 years enabling the personal to talk to family and friends here in the states. As a result I am always interested in any article that is published on the pole....... Jack WB9OTX

The new much more modern station

This is the old station

A rare, risky mission is underway to rescue sick scientists from the South Pole

"We were stuck in a place that's harder to get to than the International Space Station," said Ron Shemenski, a former physician for the station who in 2001 became the first person to be evacuated during the dark winter months. "We know we're on our own."

American satellite starts transmitting after being abandoned in 1967

An American satellite, abandoned in 1967 as a piece of Space Junk has begun transmitting again after 46 years.

An Amateur Radio Astronomer in North Cornwall accidentally picked up the signal and after cross checking with various lists, has identified it as LES1 built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and launched in 1965. The satellite failed to reach its intended orbit owing to a wiring error and has been drifting out of control ever since.

Phil Williams G3YPQ from near Bude noticed its peculiar signal drift caused by its tumbling end over end every 4 seconds as the solar panels become shadowed by the engine. ‘This gives the signal a particularly ghostly sound as the voltage from the solar panels fluctuates’ Phil says.

It is likely that the on board batteries have now disintegrated and some other component failure has caused the transmitter on 237Mhz, to start up when its in sunlight.

LES1 is about the size of a small car, It is not likely to re-enter the atmosphere for a long time as the orbit is still relatively high. It poses no threat other than that caused by the thousands of other pieces of space junk in orbit.

Phil says its remarkable to think that electronics built nearly 50 years ago, 12 years before Voyager 1, and long before microprocessors and integrated circuits, is still capable of working in the hostile environs of space.

Listening to the signal you can easily imagine the craft tumbling over and over every 4 seconds and the transmitter starting up as the sun rises. He refers to the hobby as ‘Radio-Archeology’!

Assault rifle - Semiautomatic - Full Automatic - ???

I set out to explain the difference between semiautomatic and full automatic, also the term assault rifle. I found very quickly that there is so much confusion and deliberate deception in print that it is impossible to explain. That said, unless you know the difference yourself it is a waste of time searching for the definition.
So here is my take:

Assault rifle:
a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for army infantry use.
This means it can be full automatic firing - keep the trigger pulled and it keeps firing.
Illegal for civilian purchase.

Semiautomatic:
You must pull the trigger each time the weapon fires. Most are legal for civilian purchase. miss-Called Assault rifles by news media and people that don't know what they are talking about.

Full Automatic:
keep the trigger pulled and it keeps firing until the trigger is released. Illegal for civilian purchase.

A great tribute to the 'Greatest Generation'

I can only send this to people of our generation, since most of today’s people don't have any idea who these men were and that's a pity.  They were all heroes in their own right and made America great in its own right!

And of course we have ..... Audie Murphy, America's most-decorated soldier, who became a Hollywood star as a result of his US Army service that included his being awarded the Medal of Honor.  Would someone please remind me again how many of today's Hollywood elite, sports celebs and politicians put their careers on hold to enlist for service in Iraq or Afghanistan?

The only one who even comes close was Pat Tillman, who turned down a contract offer of $3.6 million over three years from the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the US Army after Sept, 11, 2001 and serve as a Ranger in Afghanistan, where he died in 2004. But rather than being lauded for his choice and his decision to put his country before his career, he was mocked and derided by many
of his peers.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I submit to you that this is not
the America today that it was seventy years ago.

And I, for one, am saddened.

My generation grew up watching, being entertained by and laughing with so many of these fine people, never really knowing what they contributed to the war effort.

Like millions of Americans during the WWII, there was a job that needed doing they didn't question, they went and did it, those that came home returned to their now new normal life and carried on, very few ever saying what they did or saw.

They took it as their "responsibility", their duty to Country, to protect & preserve our freedoms & way of life, not just for themselves but for all future generations to come.

I'm forever, humbly,
in their debt !!!

God Bless them all !!!

Thank you Ken A. for forwarding this to me.

Flag Day - June 14

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14th in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

Update on my Elecraft KX3

The KX3 is about the size of a small note pad but has many more features that some of my radios that are ten times its size.

After two weeks of the learning curve I am learning how to get the most out of the radio. This beast is very hard to opperate, but once you get by the intense learning curve I must say this is a fantastic radio. I have spent hours looking at and trying to find the correct button and or menu entry. Some buttons with just a momentary push gives a result, but a 1 1/2 second push gives another assignment, then a 3 second push gives another. I must keep the manual or the Nifty book lying next to the tranciever to know what to push. When completely brain dead my good friend Bryan (N8WD) in Ohio gives me the help needed to do what I want to accomplish. If this radio put out 100 watts instead of 15 it would be a king of the Ham Radios. I have found tho 15 watts is normally enough wattage to do the job. A good antenna is a must tho. I have disbelievers on SSB, they tell me I must be running at least 100 watts. On CW I get better reports most of the time than I give out to 100 watt stations. The filtering is be on reproach. The noise blanker works great also. It has a built in voice keyer and 99 memories. There is a computer interface to do many things that would be hard to do with the buttons on the radio. It will take me awhile longer till I can lay the book aside but I will get there in a few more weeks. This is a radio for a young sharp mind but I'm 70 years old and slow. All and all I love this radio and it sure makes Ham Radio fun. I have worked several states on 40 meters, no DX as of yet but that will come in time. I check into the Indiana Traffic Net on 75 meters each morning on SSB with just a few watts sometimes even 5 watts and I have never needed a relay. ..... to be continued. Jack WB9OTX

N4DSP Jon = a legal scammer

n4dsp Jon bought a KX3 radio via PayPal from me then wanted the money back because he changed his mind.
I refunded $100.00 to make him happy, but it did not. Before I could ship it he turned me into PayPal for misrepresentation. How would he know that as he does not have the KX3, I guess I'm a jerk and he has buyers remorse. I am now being investigated by PayPal. He now emails me wanting $200 more dollars to drop the charge. Remember his call (N4DSP) and  if I were you I would not sell to him.
To be continued.
Jack WB9OTX
..........................................................
PayPal decided in favor of the buyer

OK, n4dsp Jon you won, nothing I can do now but pay all of the 3% fees to PayPal and recover the $100.00 I sent you. This $100.00 was refunded to you to insure resolution of the sale. You did not close the sale.you then filed a claim with PayPal claiming "misrepresentation" . I call it buyer's remorse, In a nutshell "you changed your mind" and waned to back out of the deal after you had paid me for the goods. I ask you, "how would you know it was misrepresentation if you had not seen the goods"? You filed the claim with PayPal before I shipped the package to you. PayPal told me "not" to ship until the claim was resolved. Now if you do not repay the $100.00 I will file a theft claim with your local police department.

I have lost any and all respect for PayPal after their decision on this sale.

So if you have it in for someone just buy something from them pay with PayPal then file a claim
The seller is screwed. This jerk cost me $48.00 in PayPal fees, His cost was $3.00 when he refunded the $100.00.

I wear a 22 Kill Ring

Why is the ring worn on the index finger?

That is exactly why. Because it raises questions, which in turn raises awareness. It stands out as something that is easily identifiable, as opposed to just another ring on the ring finger. You can see a black ring on the index finger and know right away what it represents.

Aside from that, there is also a deeper, less talked about meaning behind the ring, and why we reference the “trigger finger”. In the U.S., gun shots are the most common method of suicide. #22KILL wants to “black out” the trigger finger, as a reminder and a way of saying that this needs to stop. If, God forbid, a person with the ring ever reaches that point of considering suicide, then maybe feeling that ring on their finger will remind them that they are never alone, and that help is always available.

Francis Gary Powers 56 years ago

The 1960 U-2 incident occurred during the Cold War on 1 May 1960, during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower and the premiership of Nikita Khrushchev, when a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down while in Soviet airspace. The aircraft, flown by Central Intelligence Agency pilot Francis Gary Powers, was performing photographic aerial reconnaissance when it was hit by an S-75 Dvina (SA-2 Guideline) surface-to-air missile and crashed in Sverdlovsk. Powers parachuted safely and was captured.

Brenda Hanson and Roger McKenzie K8ODH / K8DHO SCAMMERS

Although I lost $50 I feel very good about stopping this couple in the scam with  Liberia. I had an advantage as I work for a private Investigator and am friends with our Town Marshal Both of these people took the time and used their resources to at the very least take out part of the link back to Liberia. I am sorry about some of the other people that have contacted me about loosing their money to this scam, some lost hundreds of dollars. I always used PayPal except this time, and whamo ! I hit the scam pro. I will never send another money order again.

Hi Jack,
I just received a call from a Lt. Moss from Elyria, Oh. police dept. They have raided a house (Brinda Hanson ?) and found evidence of a millions of dollar scam operation. the scam is based out of Liberia Africa. Moss stated I would never see the money order or my $50.00, He thanked me for the help in this investigation, but nothing can be done to recover the funds because of the Liberia Africa location.

That is the best news I've heard in a long, long time.  The entire ham community thanks you for your efforts.  All three ham swap websites are still plagued by multiple scammers - I hope this will make at least some of them disappear.  Even if we can't touch the real scammers in Africa at least we can get their accomplices here in the U.S. and put them away.If you haven't already please consider writing the same information and post it on QRZ.COM (in their Swapmeet - Stolen Radios, Scams and Rip-offs area) and on EHAM.NET (just make a listing under Scams).  All of us work together and share information - I have copied both Dave KN7S and Mark NA6M on this e-mail.Thank you again - you have done a tremendous service to the ham community.73,

Combofix - Get It - you'll need it

I had a virus (Chrome redirect) that I could not get off. I tried several virus removal programs, even some that were very expencive with no results. Then I was advised to try Combofix. This free little program done the trick. My wife's computer came down with a nasty virus a few days later and Combofix removed it. I keep this little program loaded on a flash drive so I will have it handy. You may want to do the same. Get it at:
http://www.combofix.org/

Combofix is a freeware (a legitimate spyware remover created by sUBs), Combofix was designed to scan a computer for known malware, spyware (SurfSideKick, QooLogic, and Look2Me as well as any other combination of the mentioned spyware applications) and remove them,ComboFix allows the manual removal of spyware infections , It ‘s a specialized effective cleaning tool, which is useful compared to other malware and spyware removers. After Combofix finished,a report will be created. You can use this report to search and remove infections which are not automatically removed.

Smithsonian Back Storage Room

To say the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. is large is, to put it lightly, an understatement. The museum, which does not charge a fee for admission, is housed in a building with a total area of 1,320,000 square feet! If that whopping figure puts you off, don't be intimidated; the space accessible by the public is a comparatively minuscule 350,000 square feet.

When is Easter

Easter day is the first Sunday after the 14th day of the lunar month (the nominal full moon) that falls on or after 21 March (nominally the day of the vernal equinox). For determining the feast, Christian churches settled on a method to define a reckoned "ecclesiastical" full moon, rather than observations of the true Moon. Eastern Orthodox Christians calculate the fixed date of 21 March according to the Julian Calendar rather than the modern Gregorian Calendar, and use an ecclesiastical full moon that occurs four to five days later than the western ecclesiastical full moon.

Knight-Kit Ocean Hopper Receiver

When I was very young I built a Knight-Kit Ocean Hopper Receiver, It was sold by Allied Radio out of Chicago. Allied produced a big thick catalog that was every boys dream book, and I dog eared the pages. The Ocean Hopper Receiver was soldered together with a wood burning iron. An old speaker was mounted in a Nestles Quick Co-Co Tin. I can't remember how many tubes, maybe 3 or 4 the frequency was controlled by 4 pin coil forms. The 4 coils divided from 0.1 to 30 Mhz. The gain above about 15 Mhz. was pitiful. Most of the listing was done parked on the AM broadcast band, but some international broadcasts were listened to also, such as BBC, VOA, Radio Netherlands, and so on. I was young and not knowledge of radio theory yet. I believed it would be possible to wind another coil to receive an unlimited amount of frequencies above 30 Mhz. I experimented with different turns of magnet wire on the form, but nothing was ever achieved.  The receiver was what was called a re-ginerative receive. This is one of the most basic designs. I dreamed of what was to hear on VHF and UHF frequencies or even above. Now that was a long time ago as I am 70 years old now. I just (today) accomplished that dream I had then. I just set up a SDR (software defined radio) it receives from 0.1 to 2,000 Mhz., a 2,000 Mhz. receiver was not heard of or maybe non-existence in the 1950s. Here are a couple of photos of the Ocean Hopper and coil, this but one of the radios that had jump started me into my great hobby of Ham Radio....... Jack .... Radio Station WB9OTX

Bill did it to me

I'm old school because I have a couple of computers still running Windows XP, the rest, All but one, run Windows 7 OS. One I updated to Windows 10. I received a piece of hardware that stated it would not run on XP so I removed the XP computer and put the Windows 10 in its place. I hooked up hardware from the old to the new Windows 10 machine. I use it to interact with my Ham radio station. Ooops none of the hardware that worked perfect on XP malfunctions on 10. I spent two hours reloading drivers and checking / un-checking boxes trying to get things to work but no luck. I then put the hardware over on a Windows 7 computer and it worked perfect. Not to give up I tried another piece of hardware, The same outcome. I will run the new hardware across the room on a 7 machine. Its all I can do. Bill has did it to me good this time. After a few bad words I put everything back like it was. If you have older software or external hardware that you really like and it runs fine on XP or 7, beware of Windows 10. Don't let Bill get you like he did me. ........ Jack

A fun day in Ham Radio

About a 10,000 mile QSO from Indiana to VK on 80 Mtrs

I woke up at about 3am made a cup of coffee and turned on the radio. I don't usally get on the radio at that time of morning but I took advantage of the early morning hour. I tried 80 meters and 25 watts with JT65 digital mode. Called CQ a time or two and low and behold a VK gave me a call. This is middle Australia and a very rare catch on 80 meters, matter a fact the first in 45 years on that band, a nice catch. called CQ a few more times with no reply. I switched to 40 meters and worked a few European stations, but nothing from Africa. The sun was just about up. This means the grey line propagation is coming. I switched to 17 meters and called a few CQs with a few European contacts again nothing rare then an Asiatic Russian (UA9) called. Wow with that stoke of luck I called it quits and had a celebration cup of coffee and a bowl of granola cereal. I watched the TV news and read the local news on the computer. I checked into the Indiana Traffic net on 75 meters, nothing coming to my area so turned the rig to 6 meters. I called CQ a number of times with SSB and then put out a few CQs with JT65 but no takers, the band was dead as a door nail as it is most of the time. With that I left the rig on 17 meters so I could check it later on. All and all what a good radio morning. I will have an other look this evening - I hope my luck stays good...... Jack WB9OTX
