Fly in the B-17

EAA is offering historic flight experiences in its beautifully restored B-17G Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast.” This aircraft is an example of the American heavy bomber that helped turn the tide of battle in World War II. Fly a mission back in time and feel the might of this magnificent aircraft, just as those brave young men did more than 50 years ago.

Witch window

In American vernacular architecture, a witch window (also known as a Vermont window, a coffin window,[1] or a sideways window[2]) is a window (usually a double-hung sash window, occasionally a single-sided casement window) placed in the gable-end wall of a house[1] and rotated approximately 1/8 of a turn (45 degrees) from the vertical, leaving it diagonal, with its long edge parallel to the roof slope.[1][2] This technique allows a builder to fit a full-sized window into the long, narrow wall space between two adjacent roof lines (see photograph). These windows are found almost exclusively in or near the U.S. state of Vermont, principally in farmhouses from the 19th century.

BEWARE THE MARS HOAX:

For the seventh year in a row, an email is circulating the internet claiming that Mars will approach Earth and swell to the size of a full Moon on August 27th. It's an historic event! It's also a hoax. Mars will be 314 million km from Earth on August 27th, shining in the western sunset sky like an ordinary red star of medium brightness. To see Mars as large as the full Moon, you'll have to board a spaceship.

California in 1850

Do you know what happened 160 years ago this fall...back in 1850 ?
California became a state. The people had no electricity. The state had no money. Almost everyone spoke Spanish. There were gunfights in the streets. So basically nothing has changed, except the women had real boobs and the men didn't hold hands.

VJ Day - August 15, 1945

On August 6, the Americans dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Late in the evening of August 8, the Soviet Union, in accordance with Yalta agreements, but in violation of the Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact, declared war on Japan, and soon after midnight on August 9, invaded the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. Later on August 9, the Americans dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The combined shock of these events caused Emperor Hirohito to intervene and order the Big Six to accept the terms for ending the war that the Allies had set down in the Potsdam Declaration. After several more days of behind-the-scenes negotiations and a failed coup d'état, Hirohito gave a recorded radio address to the nation on August 15. In the radio address, called the Gyokuon-ho-so- (Jewel Voice Broadcast), he read the Imperial Rescript on surrender, announcing to the Japanese populace the surrender of Japan.

Murphy has been outsmarted

After climbing the tower (i'm too old for that) and removing an antenna that I hardly ever used, then installing a new 10 element 2 meter yagi beam I found that the rotor did not work. woe as me ! I had a very good (too good) rotor in the shed but there was no rotor wire to hook it up. I ordered 100 foot of wire at a cost of 60 dollars (copper has gone up) and hooked it up for the test. Yep it worked fine but it was 95 degrees so the job of installation went on hold till it cooled down some. Last night a light bulb went off in my head but I had to wait for my wife this afternoon to get home before I could try the idea. I had her move the control box back and forth while I climbed the tower. I foolishly stood at the tip top holding the beam rocking it back and forth. By the way she gave me some good advice,"don't fall off", she said. Well I didn't and when I got down I hit the switch and low and behold it turned. I called another Ham in Seymour then one in Milan and it worked perfect. Now does anyone want to buy $60 worth of rotor cable I now have no need for? Murphy was defeated this time but he is just around the corner waiting for me I have a feeling !

Tent caterpillar invade my yard trees

The Eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum) is a univoltine, social species that forms communal nests in the branches of trees. It is sometimes confused with the gypsy moth, or the fall webworm and may be erroneously referred to as a bagworm which is the common name applied to unrelated caterpillars in the family Psychidae. The moths oviposit almost exclusively on trees in the plant family Rosaceae, particularly cherry (Prunus) and apple (Malus). The caterpillars are hairy with areas of blue, white, black and orange. The blue and white colors are structural colors created by the selective filtering of light by microtubules that arise on the cuticle.

Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Aug 6, 1945

During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States conducted two atomic bombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. After six months of intense strategic fire-bombing of 67 Japanese cities the Japanese government ignored an ultimatum given by the Potsdam Declaration. By executive order of President Harry S. Truman the U.S. dropped the nuclear weapon "Little Boy" on the city of Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945, followed by the detonation of "Fat Man" over Nagasaki on August 9

1957 U.S. and Canada create NORAD

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a bi-national United States and Canadian organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. Aerospace warning includes the monitoring of man-made objects in space, and the detection, validation, and warning of attack against North America whether by aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, through mutual support arrangements with other commands. Aerospace control includes ensuring air sovereignty and air defense of the airspace of Canada and the United States. The May 2006 NORAD Agreement renewal added a maritime warning mission, which entails a shared awareness and understanding of the activities conducted in U.S. and Canadian maritime approaches, maritime areas and inland waterways.
