The most remembered was my moon bounce (EME) contacts, two Ripley County newspapers published the stories. Lots of new friends were made and the two people that have made my life a pure nightmare seem to have let up on the lies and harassment. We were blessed with a new dog called Taco. A new form of Ham Radio digital communication was set up called JT65HF, hundreds of contacts with very low power (QRP) were achieved. A new tri-band yagi beam was erected and performed perfect allowing contacts worldwide. My wind turbine and solar panels were the talk of the town. My web page business (Ripley Computer Service) prospered. My wife and I were able to celibate our 45th wedding anniversary. We spent $$$$ on squirrel and bird feed. A new web cam was placed on the town square. Live streaming audio from my digital radio scanner was set up and continues to have many listeners. Our health continues to be very good. There are lots of other good things that have taken place and I am looking forward to the coming of 2012......... Jack

I was setting in a club bar having a beer after the day was done when a young couple came in. The male ordered a beer and the girl ordered a coke, it was plane to see the girl was under 21. She strolled back to the back where the juke box was located. She stood infront of it for quite a while, she then retured to the bar and said to the barmaid,"What kind of a bar is this? there is no Patsy Cline songs on that juke box". This incident has always stuck in my mine because this cute little girl was not even 21 years old and Patsy Cline had died some 20+ years before she was born. Carl E. (Eddie) Demaree, 73 of Osgood passed away Wednesday November 23, 2011 at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. He was born May 19, 1938 in Milan, IN the son of Charles E. and Grace (Patrick) Demaree. He married Marjorie (Knowlton) Demaree September 19, 1959, and she survives. Eddie was a Heavy Equipment Operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181 since 1959. Eddie was a member of the F&AM Milan Masonic lodge #31. Eddie enjoyed gardening, raising tomatoes, car racing, fishing, and hunting.

Eddie is survived by his wife Marjorie A. Demaree of Osgood, Daughters: Shannon D. Demaree of Batesville, Suzanne C. Grigsby of Osgood. Brother: Jack Demaree of Versailles. Sisters: Fern Strimple of Columbus, IN. Norma Lee Meachum of IL, Vivian Storie of Madison, IN. Two Granddaughters: Carlene J. Eaton and Augusta W. Grigsby, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Charles F. Demaree, James Collinsworth, and two sisters: Faye Sloan, and Edna Horton.

Funeral services will be Sunday November 27, 2011, 2PM at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan with Pastor Tommy Beatley of the Delaware United Methodist Church. officiating. If you are a Civil War buff or just like a very good interesting book to read you will enjoy Killing Lincoln. I know that you die hard democrats do not care for the author, get over it, put Bill out of your mind and just enjoy the story. I must confess I did not know the history of this war but I found myself enjoying this great true story and at the same time getting a history lesson. I downloaded the audio version thinking I would burn it to CD so to listen on my set top player or in my car, but after unzipping the file I found it to be in a format that would not play with the standard default player (windows media player) that comes on all Window's OS computers. In order to use the downloaded file you must find, download, and install a program to convert it to the standard MP3 format. This is above most users ability. So I do not recommend getting the book this way unless you are an advanced computer user. Another note, it takes about five hours to download with a very fast broadband internet connection. If you have an Amazon Kindle you can read it for $12.99.

Today:
A gloomy overcast morning but the temperature is warm for this date. The sun has settled down slightly with a flux reading of 140. This reading tells me the Ham bands will be good but not great. I have the radio set on 28 Mhz. and see lots of stations coming in from Europe. I will try to contact a few later. I worked a fellow from Iowa last evening that was only using 2 watts of power on JT65HF mode. Yesterday I tightened up some of the hardware on my moon bounce antennas that had loosened up with the wind we have had for the past few days. I had wanted to take down the array for the winter, but its not going to happen. It is a big job that I can't do by myself. We will see if the wind and ice do it in this Winter. I talked to Mike (k9mdc) from Greensburg this morning. He has installed an antenna that I had suggested. He likes it and tells me it works on the bands 75 through 10 meters. I will put together one for field day next June. I have a best friend in the hospital and I am hoping he is doing better. I received a report yesterday and it was not good. I wish I could do something to get him back to normal. He was one of the fellows I eat biscuts and gravy with each Saturday morning, I am hoping he can rejoin us soon. My wife Betty got a new I-phone and after a glitch with the SIM card it is now working fine. She also received a new Kindle Fire from Amazon. This little jewel is fantastic. I have it on the "N" network wifi system here at home. It is $200 but this is much less than the tablet computers costing about $500. It has internet and email for free and also features all the Kindle books and movies. I don't know why you would want to watch a movie on the tiny screen it has, but to each his own. If you are not near a public wifi it will still connect but it will draw from your data plan. One draw back it looks to me if you would drop it to a hard surface it would be all over. I checked on a case but found them very costly. She will have to be careful with it. I see that Natalie Wood is all over the news. One of my favorite movies was "Inside Daisy Clover" and I haven't seen it for years. I have hundreds of DVD movies but it is not one of them. I looked online to see if I could buy it and I could but the price was too much for me. I will see if I can find it from one of my geeky comrades. Anyone out there have it ?? I did want to tell you about the wonderful program South Ripley students produced for the many Veterans that attended on November 11th. A very well prepared breakfast was enjoyed before the program. The Big Wheel Story - Again

In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their ather was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two. Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $15 a week to buy groceries. Now that he had decided to leave, there would be no more beatings, but no food either. If there was a welfare system in effect in southern Indiana at that time, I certainly knew nothing about it. I scrubbed the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress. I loaded them into the rusty old 51 Chevy and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our small town. No luck. The kids stayed crammed into the car and tried to be quiet while I tried to convince whomever would listen that I was willing to learn or do anything. I had to have a job. Still no luck. The last place we went to, just a few miles out of town, was an old Root Beer Barrel drive-in that had been converted to a truck stop. It was called the Big Wheel. An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked out of the window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard shift, 11 at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour and I could start that night. I raced home and called the teenager down the street that baby-sat for people. I bargained with her to come and sleep on my sofa for a dollar a night. She could arrive with her pajamas on and thekids would already be asleep. This seemed like a good arrangement to her, so we made a deal. That night when the little ones and I knelt to say our prayers we all thanked God for finding Mommy a job. And so I started at the Big Wheel. When I got home in the mornings I woke the baby-sitter up and sent her home with one dollar of my tip money--fully half of what I averaged every night. As the weeks went by, heating bills added a strain to my meager wage. The tires on the old Chevy had the consistency of penny balloons and began to leak. I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home. One bleak fall morning, I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires! There was no note, no nothing, just those beautiful brand new tires. Had angels taken up residence in Indiana? I wondered. I made a deal with the local service station. In exchange for his mounting the new tires, I would clean up his office. I remember it took me a lot longer to scrub his floor than it did for him to do the tires. I was now working six nights instead of five and it still wasn't enough. Christmas was coming and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some oldtoys. Then I hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches on top of patches on the boys pants and soon they would be too far gone to repair. On Christmas Eve the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel. These were the truckers, Les, Frank, and Jim, and a state trooper named Joe. A few musicians were hanging around after a gig at the Legion and were dropping nickels in the pinball machine. The regulars all just sat around and talked through the wee hours of the morning and then left to get home before the sun! came up. When it was time for me to go home at seven o'clock on Christmas morning I hurried to the car. I was hoping the kids wouldn't wake up before I managed to get home and get the presents from the basement and place them under the tree. (We had cut down a small cedar tree by the side of the road down by the dump.) It was still dark and I couldn't see much, but there appeared to be some dark shadows in the car-or was that just a trick of the night? Something certainly looked different, but it was hard to tell what. When I reached the car I peered warily into one of the side windows. Then my jaw dropped in amazement. My old battered Chevy was filled full to the top with boxes of all shapes and sizes. I quickly opened the driver's side door, scrambled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat. Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2-10! I looked inside another box: It was full of shirts to go with the jeans. Then I peeked inside someof the other boxes: Therewas candy and nuts and bananas and bags of groceries. There was an enormous ham for baking, and canned vegetables and potatoes. There was pudding and Jell-O and cookies, pie filling and flour. There was a whole bag of laundry supplies and cleaning items. And there were five toy trucks and one beautiful little doll. As I drove back through empty streets as the sun slowly rose on most amazing Christmas Day of my life, I was sobbing with gratitude. And I will never forget the joy on the faces of my little ones that precious morning. Yes, there were angels in Indiana that long-ago December. And they all hung out at the Big Wheel truck stop.

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a 729-foot (222 m) Great Lakes freighter that made headlines after sinking in Lake Superior in a massive storm on November 10, 1975, with near hurricane-force winds and 35-foot (11 m) waves. The Fitzgerald suddenly sank approximately 17 miles (27 km) from the entrance to Whitefish Bay, at a depth of 530 feet (160 m). Her crew of 29 perished without sending any distress signals, and no bodies were recovered; she is the largest boat to have sunk in the Great Lakes. The Fitzgerald carried taconite from mines near Duluth, Minnesota, to iron works in Detroit, Toledo and other ports. Many theories, books, studies and expeditions have examined the cause of the sinking. Her sinking is one of the most well-known disasters in the history of Great Lakes shipping and is the subject of Gordon Lightfoot's 1976 hit song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

nightmare 2 days

After another 1 1/2 hours on the phone with Comcast idiots I have been sent back to where I was a week ago.
I will install the camera back to its location on the roof in the morning. All should be back to where it was in a day or two as I have to configure all the components after the hard reset. This has been a very trying few days for me as Comcast kept telling me it was in my configuration, It was not. As soon as I reverted back to my old modem all began to work again. I have over 12 hours trying to straiten this Comcast mess out............ I knew it was their fault and I was not at fault. I am old enough to remember when FM radio was was just a sideline of the big AM stations. In the 1950s and even in the early 60s there were few FM home receivers and no cars had FM. I can't remember the first car I owned that had an FM radio, I know my 57 chev had none. It must have been in the late 60s or early 70s and I'm sure it was an option. The first FM radio was purchased with the money from the sale of a calf. It was an A and B battery powered and the cost was about $60. That was big money back then. The 90 volt big battery was short lived and cost about $6. The FM stations only played what is now known as elevator music with no or very few commercials. As a kid I did not listen to the FM band very often. Armstrong received a very undeserved welcome with his invention by RCA, and Westinghouse. .......... Jack

Palisades Amusement Park was an amusement park located in Bergen County, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. Dion and the Belmonts were a leading American vocal group of the late 1950s. The group formed when Dion DiMucci joined The Belmonts - Carlo Mastrangelo, Freddie Milano, and Angelo D'Aleo - in late 1957. After an unsuccessful first single, the group were signed to Laurie Records. Their breakthrough came when «I Wonder Why» made # 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the group appeared for the first time on the Dick Clark TV show. They followed it with the ballads «No One Knows» (#19) and «Don't Pity Me» (#40). This success won Dion and the Belmonts their first major tour in late 1958, with The Coasters, Buddy Holly and Bobby Darin, and this was followed up by the «Winter Dance Party» tour with Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. I was reading a page in your blog from Tuesday, July 14, 2009, on the ref’d. Howdy Doody character. Noticed that someone told you that the “puppet” replaced the live actress, Judy Tyler, after her death in an auto accident. Actually, the original character was a “puppet” and Tyler replaced the puppet in 1951 or 52, in a “mystical” smoke filled episode of the show where the Princess was changed to a live person. Tyler left the show in 1953 or 55(depending on the source you read) to pursue an acting career, and was in a Rogers & Hammerstein musical, Pipe Dream, then got a role in Jailhouse Rock, opposite Elvis. She was killed in a car accident shortly after finishing that in 1957. She was replaced as the Princess when she left the show in 1953 or 55 by actress, Gina Genardi, who was replaced by Linda Marsh, or vice versa(depending on the source) until the end of the show in 1960.

I received this email today from a close friend. I have received it before several times, but I always take a minute or two to read it again. I don't know if it is a true story or not, it makes no difference. The message it gives is all that matters. Before you read it go get a Kleenex, you will need it........ Jack

He writes:

My lead flight attendant came to me and said,

"We have an H.R. on this flight." (H.R. stands for human remains.)

"Are they military?" I asked.

'Yes', she said.

'Is there an escort?' I asked.

'Yes, I already assigned him a seat'.

'Would you please tell him to come to the

flight deck. You can board him early," I said..

A short while later, a young army sergeant entered the flight deck. He was the image of the perfectly dressed soldier.

He introduced himself and I asked him about his soldier.

The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and still with us.

'My soldier is on his way back to Virginia ,' he said.

He proceeded to answer my questions, but

offered no words.

I asked him if there was anything I could do for him and he said no.

I told him that he had the toughest job in the

military and that I appreciated the work that

he does for the families of our fallen soldiers.

The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand. He left the flight deck to find his seat.

We completed our preflight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure.

About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin.

'I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is on board', she said. She then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother,

wife and 2-year old daughter were

escorting their son, husband, and father home.

The family was upset because they were unable to see the container that the soldier was in before we left.

We were on our way to a major hub at which the family was going to wait four hours for the connecting flight home to Virginia .

The father of the soldier told the flight attendant that knowing his son was below him in the cargo compartment and being unable to see him was too much for him and the family to bear.

He had asked the flight attendant if there was anything that could be done to allow them to see him upon our arrival.

The family wanted to be outside by the cargo door to watch the soldier being taken off the airplane..

I could hear the desperation in the flight attendants voice when she asked me if there was anything I could do..

'I'm on it', I said. I told her that I would get back to her. Airborne communication with my company normally occurs in the form of e-mail like messages.

I decided to bypass this system and contact my flight dispatcher directly on a secondary radio.

There is a radio operator in the operations control center who connects you to the telephone of the dispatcher.

I was in direct contact with the dispatcher..

I explained the situation I had on board with the family and what it was the family wanted.

He said he understood and that he would get back to me.

Two hours went by and I had not heard from the dispatcher.

We were going to get busy soon and I needed to know what to tell the family.

I sent a text message asking for an update. I saved the return message from the dispatcher and the following is the text:

'Captain, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.

There is policy on this now and I had to check on a few things.

Upon your arrival a dedicated escort team will meet the aircraft.

The team will escort the family to the ramp and plane side.

A van will be used to load the remains with a

secondary van for the family. The family will be taken to their departure area and escorted into the terminal where the remains can be seen on the ramp.

It is a private area for the family only.

When the connecting aircraft arrives, the family will be escorted onto the ramp and plane side to watch the remains being loaded for the final leg home.

Captain, most of us here in flight control are

veterans. Please pass our condolences on to the family.

Thanks.'

I sent a message back telling flight control thanks for a good job. I printed out the message and gave it to the lead flight attendant to pass on to the father.

The lead flight attendant was very thankful and told me, 'You have no idea how much this will mean to them.'

Things started getting busy for the descent, approach and landing. After landing, we cleared the runway and taxied to the ramp area.

The ramp is huge with 15 gates on either side of the alleyway.

It is always a busy area with aircraft maneuvering every which way to enter and exit.

When we entered the ramp and checked in with the ramp controller, we were told that all traffic was being held for us.

'There is a team in place to meet the aircraft', we were told. It looked like it was all coming together, then I realized that once we turned the seat belt sign off, ev eryone would stand up at once and delay the family from getting off the airplane.

As we approached our gate, I asked the copilot to tell the ramp controller we were going to stop short of the gate to make an announcement to the passengers. He did that and the ramp controller said, 'Take your time.'

I stopped the aircraft and set the parking brake.

I pushed the public address button and said, 'Ladies and gentleman, this is your Captain speaking I have stopped short of our gate to make a special announcement.

We have a passenger on board who deserves our honor and respect.

His Name is Private XXXXXX, a soldier who recently lost his life.

Private XXXXXX is under your feet in the cargo hold. Escorting him today is Army Sergeant XXXXXXX. Also, on board are his father, mother, wife, and daughter.

Your entire flight crew is asking for all passengers to remain in their seats to allow the family to exit the aircraft first. Thank you.'

We continued the turn to the gate, came to a Stop and started our shutdown procedures.

A couple of minutes later I opened the cockpit door. I found the two forward flight attendants crying, something you just do not see.

I was told that after we came to a stop, every passenger on the aircraft stayed in their seats, waiting for the family to exit the aircraft.

When the family got up and gathered their things, a passenger slowly started to clap his hands. Moments later more passengers joined in and soon the entire aircra ft was clapping.

Words of 'God Bless You', I'm sorry, thank you, be proud, and other kind words were uttered to the family as they made their way down the aisle and out of the airplane.

They were escorted down to the ramp to finally be with their loved one.

Many of the passengers disembarking thanked me for the announcement I had made.

They were just words, I told them, I could say

them over and over again, but nothing I say will bring back that brave soldier.

I respectfully ask that all of you ref lect on this event and the sacrifices that millions of our men and women have made to ensure our freedom and safety in these United States of AMERICA .

As a Viet Nam Veteran I can only think of all the

veterans including the ones that rode below the deck on their way home and how they were treated.

When I read things like this I am proud that our country has not turned their backs on our soldiers returning from the various war zones today and give them the respect they so deserve.

I know every one who has served their country who reads this will have tears in their eyes, including me.

First Frost

October second brought the first frost of this Fall. A Ham Radio friend and I left for a radio swap fest at 6am to Bedford Indiana, there was fog in the valleys and near the creeks and streams on our way. I have been attending this swap fest for about 30 years and it has always been very well attended. Last year the crowd was lower, but this year I was amazed, the attendance was about one forth compared to last year. I made the comment to my friend,"there isan't enough people here to start a good fight". Some blame it on eBay, others say it is the economy. I think it is all of the above but the new and young just don't do Ham Fests. The new Hams do not communicate like the ol' timmers did. Seems they don't make friends and do not talk or attend anything like the old guys did. "Things Change" I guess. I will have to mow the yard one more time it looks like. In past years the last grass cutting was the end of September or the week before Pumpkin Show. With Fall arriving the leaves will be changing into beautiful colors. I'll be breaking out the camera and posting a few pictures on the Web soon. It is to warm into the seventies later in the week, this will let me do the things to preparer for the on-coming cold and snow. I don't mind the Winter too much, it is just the fact you must endure living in Indiana. I don't think I would want to live anywhere else. ........ Jack

Pumpkin Show 2011 is history

It was a damp cool morning for the parade but not enough to halt the fun and tradition. I marched just to the rear of the Versailles Legion Color Guard in my traditional Class A Army uniform. I think this is the last year with the original, but for next year I will buy a size larger shirt. I had much trouble getting the collar button fastened. I will go from size 15 to a 17. I hate to deviate from the original but at age 66 I have been very lucky to get in it this many years. I have posted the video on YouTube of the color guard and parade for those that were not able to attend.

When I was very young I remember watching the TV series The Big Picture that was dedicated to the military. Another TV show was Victory At Sea. This was pure Navy. I have ten hours or so of this program that was recorded on VHS and now transferred to DVD. Sometimes when its raining or bad snowy cold weather I dig these classics out and watch them. I can't help it, I just love this stuff.

Flo Pegee Skeen - A Versailles Icon

I am ask about Flo Pegee several times a year by email and in person. I always state that I don't really know much about her. I did have the chance to talk to her on two occasions when I was very young, 11 or 12 as to the best I can remember. I was walking from our farm to the Versailles show I and all of the other kids never walked past her house on her side od the street, Why, we were afraid of her because of the stories being told about her as a witch. As I passed across from her converted green tavern (where she lived later in life) she called out,"young man oh young man, could you help me a minute". As I walked across the street to her I must tell you I was very afraid, but I kept walking to her. As I came near she said, "Can you lift this flower pot from the porch for me"? I did not reply but did as she said putting it on the sidewalk as she pointed where to place it. She said thank you so much. I replied you are welcome mam. As I turned to walk away she shouted "but I didn't pay you", as she was opening a little change purse pulling out a dime. I said "no mam you do not owe me anything". She told me in a very grateful voice, "you have been raised proper thank you". I walked away on my way to the show. I never told any of the other kids about the encounter with Flo. The second time was about a year later. Flo was in her yard and remembering the last encounter I just said good morning mam. She replied just a simple hello. As I look back I feel she was a very misunderstood lonely lady. I have never judged her as I have no proof of the roomers that were told about her. Even today if you mutter the words Flo Pegee, witch will he heard. She did dress in black and always wore a large hat, does this make her a witch, I think not. The big news today is a big happy bithday to me ! 66 today.
I received a nice home made card and photo from my grand daughter. I will go to the local pub this afternoon for my birthday beer and a kiss on the cheek (I hope it is a bar main working today). I worked two moon bounce stations last night, one from Oklahoma and one from Russia. Conditions are poor but I will try again tonight. I added a few more QSL EME cards to my online EME log page. See them here. I took a few photos of the lot where they are building the new Courthouse Anex (or what ever they are calling it). I will post them on the Net soon. It is a bright sunny day with a nice 7MPH breeze from the South West, a perfect Fall day. The Friendship Shoot is going on this week and Versailles Pumpkin Show is in two weeks. All full moons rise around the time of sunset. In general the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day. As it moves in orbit around Earth, the Harvest Moon and Hunter's Moon are special because, around the time of these full moons, the time difference between moonrise on successive evenings is shorter than usual. This means that the moon rises approximately 30 minutes later from one night to the next, as seen from about 40 degrees N. or S. latitude. Thus, there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise around the time following these full moons. In times past this feature of these autumn moons was said to help farmers working to bring in their crops (or, in the case of the Hunter's Moon, hunters tracking their prey). They could continue being productive by moonlight even after the sun had set. A busy day has already started for me. A trip to Milan for the RCARC Ham Radio breakfast at 8:30am, Had to pick up a radio and deliver a hardline connector there. Back home at 9:30, put the camera on charge for taking photos at Cliff Hill for the Cpl. Bishop memorial that starts at 11:00. I took a look on 15 meter ham band but nothing coming threw yet switched to 20 mtrs and the band is open. I looked for a few periods with the JT65HF mode but seen no new countries I needed. The VHF contest starts at 2pm today but the moon rise for me is not till 8:30pm. I will give a few calls on 2 mtr. sideband but I will concentrate on moonbounce tonight. The Friendship Shoot starts today and will last all week. I will try to at least make it there one day. I received a very nice email from a long time friend Ham Don Faris complimenting me on the things I have done with Ham Radio, Thank you so much Don......... There are loads of County and State Police on the roads today, I guess it is because of the 10 year 911 thing, Don't speed today. More later....... Jack

I'm sure you've heard it before "If you don't like the weather in Indiana, Set on a rock for five minutes and it will change". This is so true as it was over 100 degrees only a week ago, but this morning it is 56 as I type this. Pumpkin show usually bring jacket weather and the Friendship Shoot brings rain. What will the weather be this year ? Your guess is as good as mine. After looking at the grass in the front yard I'm thinking I may only have to cut it one more time this year. With the price of gasoline I have my fingers crossed. There is an ol' saying,"Fish bite the least when the wind is out of the East". This was proven wrong as Shawn Halcomb landed a very large bass over the week end. See the video of the catch here
The NASCAR race at Atlanta was rained out but will be run today at 11am, I guess I'll have to watch it, that is if the phone doesn't ring with work for me. I watched a movie yesterday and a quote from it caught my attention, "You cant stop what's coming", this is a fact and I think it has now come. No history today, Enjoy the day..........Jack

Labor Day 2011

Today I looked over the past few days of Blog postings and find it contains mostly posting of history. I do love history but I think I have went slightly overboard with it. So today and from now on I will try to focus on a mixture of past and present. I lost a lot of sleep last night listening to the police scanner. The cops have narralded the search down to a location near Milan. At 9am this morning one escapee is still at large from the jail break Sunday morning. A very nice article appeared in the Versailles Republican newspaper about my adventures with moon bounce. This article came after one published two weeks ago in the Batesville Herald. Both reports were very flattering to me. As of today I have worked 55 plus stations on every continent except Oceanic . As soon as I work New Zealand or Australia I will have "Worked all Continents" (WAC Award). Very few have obtained this award on the 144 Mhz. (2 meter) band. See my EME log here.
Another Ham Radio thing I'm doing is a mode called WSJT65HF. Unlike moon bounce on 144 Mhz. WSJT65HF uses 1.5 to 28 Mhz. This is a very weak signal mode (QRP) and I only use 5 watts of power. This is less power than it takes to light your car's single tail light.I have worked about 50 countries in all parts of the world. This is a fairly new mode and is gaining popularity every day as new stations come on with it. With Labor day today it signals the end of Summer to me. Spring brought rain almost every day, but Summer has been very hot with temperatures of over 100 and very dry. Cooler temperatures are forecast this next week though. I am looking forward to marching in the Pumpkin Show Parade with my original Army uniform. "It still fits". See it here:

There was once a far away land called Ruritania, and in Ruritania
there was a strange phenomenon -- all the trees that grew in
Ruritainia were transparent. Now, in the days when people had lived in
mud huts, this had not been a problem, but now high-tech wood
technology had been developed, and in the new age of wood, everyone in
Ruritania found that their homes were all 100% see through. Now, until
this point, no one ever thought of allowing the police to spy on
someone's home, but the new technology made this tempting. This being
a civilized country, however, warrants were required to use binoculars
and watch someone in their home. The police, taking advantage of
this, would get warrants to use binoculars and peer in to see what was
going on. Occasionally, they would use binoculars without a warrant,
but everyone pretended that this didn't happen.

One day, a smart man invented paint -- and if you painted your house,
suddenly the police couldn't watch all your actions at will. Things
would go back to the way they were in the old age -- completely
private.

Indignant, the state decided to try to require that all homes have
video cameras installed in every nook and cranny. "After all", they
said, "with this new development crime could run rampant. Installing
video cameras doesn't mean that the police get any new capability --
they are just keeping the old one."

A wise man pointed out that citizens were not obligated to make the
lives of the police easy, that the police had survived all through the
mud hut age without being able to watch the citizens at will, and that
Ruritania was a civilized country where not everything that was
expedient was permitted. For instance, in a neighboring country, it
had been discovered that torture was an extremely effective way to
solve crimes. Ruritania had banned this practice in spite of its
expedience. Indeed, "why have warrants at all", he asked, "if we are
interested only in expedience?"

A famous paint technologist, Dorothy Quisling, intervened however. She
noted that people might take photographs of children masturbating
should the new paint technology be widely deployed without safeguards,
and the law was passed.

Soon it was discovered that some citizens would cover their mouths
while speaking to each other, thus preventing the police from reading
their lips through the video cameras. This had to be prevented, the
police said. After all, it was preventing them from conducting their
lawful surveillance. The wise man pointed out that the police had
never before been allowed to listen in on people's homes, but Dorothy
Quisling pointed out that people might use this new invention of
covering their mouths with veils to discuss the kidnapping and
mutilation of children. No one in the legislature wanted to be accused

of being in favor of mutilating children, but then again, no one
wanted to interfere in people's rights to wear what they liked, so a
compromise was reached whereby all homes were installed with
microphones in each room to accompany the video cameras. The wise man
lamented few if any child mutilations had ever been solved by the old
lip reading technology, but it was too late -- the microphones were
installed everywhere.

However, it was discovered that this was insufficient to prevent
citizens from hiding information from the authorities, because some of
them would cleverly speak in languages that the police could not
understand. A new law was proposed to force all citizens to speak at
all times only in Ruritanian, and, for good measure, to require that
they speak clearly and distinctly near the microphones. "After all",
Dorothy Quisling pointed out, "they might be using the opportunity to
speak in private to mask terrorist activities!" Terrorism struck
terror into everyone's hearts, and they rejoiced at the brilliance of
this new law.

Meanwhile, the wise man talked one evening to his friends on how all
of this was making a sham of the constitution of Ruritania, of which
all Ruritanians were proud. "Why", he asked, "are we obligated to
sacrifice all our freedom and privacy to make the lives of the police
easier? There isn't any real evidence that this makes any big dent in
crime anyway! All it does is make our privacy forfeit to the state!"

However, the wise man made the mistake of saying this, as the law
required, in Ruritanian, clearly and distinctly, and near a
microphone. Soon, the newly formed Ruritanian Secret Police arrived
and took him off, and got him to confess by torturing him. Torture
was, after all, far more efficient than the old methods, and had been
recently instituted to stop the recent wave of people thinking obscene
thoughts about tomatoes, which Dorothy Quisling noted was one of the
major problems of the new age of plenty and joy.

It's not often that a second hard drive mechanically fails but this past week mine did. As luck would have it, it was the computer that I edit web pages with. I could do no work (make money) till I retrieved my files. I am a back up fanatic for the simple reason it has happend to me so many times in the past. I decided the "C" drive would be pushed into holding what was lost on the "D" drive, So my trusty FTP program went into action. I created a directory called "HTML" and added the sub-directories, Used the FTP program to download all of the files for the web pages that were loaded on my web host's server. After a few glitches I was back in business. Always leave yourself an out. Have your files at a place where you can retrieve them, May it be on a 2nd drive, a thumb drive, a CD or DVD, or on a server on the internet. Keep your address book, word documents, photos, and anything else you can't afford to loose. It will happen to you. There are several places to store files for free on the web. A good place to store photos is picasaweb.google.com And word documents and spreadsheets is Google Docs. Don't be sorry - back up.

The Coastal Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) station at Fowey Rocks, with platform elevation of 141 feet (43 m), in its last transmission at 4:30 a.m. EDT, August 24, recorded an 8-minute average wind of 142 miles per hour (229 km/h) with a peak gust of 169 miles per hour (272 km/h) shortly before the equipment was destroyed. It is probable that higher winds occurred at Fowey Rocks after the station was destroyed.
